The stage adaptation of the hugely successful family film High School Musical has confirmed a London season at the Hammersmith Apollo this summer. The scholastic sensation will open on 30 June and run for six weeks until 9 August. The Hammersmith production is staged at the same time as a second production plays a 31 date UK tour.
The High School Musical phenomenon began in 2006, when the Disney channel first aired the musical family film which has now been seen by 250 million people in more than 100 countries. The soundtrack was the number one selling album in the world in 2006, going double platinum in the UK and delivering nine concurrent singles in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, a feat never before achieved by a TV movie.
The plot is classic feel-good family film fare, as popular jock Troy and shy new academic Gabriella shock their peers by signing up to audition for roles in the school musical. While the different school groups may try and stop them, ultimately they are fighting a losing battle and are instead inspired by the tuneful twosome to reveal their own hidden talents.
Steve Fickinger, Disney Theatrical Group’s Vice President of Theatrical Licensing commented on news of the London run, saying: “I’m thrilled that the British public has responded so enthusiastically to the opportunity to spend more time with these characters; we’ve had such a huge reaction to the UK tour. I’m certain this great opportunity to have a run in London will give families the perfect chance come together to enjoy this stage production.”
The stage show has been adapted from the movie by David Simpatico and features the entire catchy pop soundtrack, including We’re All In This Together and Breaking Free, plus two new songs.
