Following the news last week that Heathers fans (or corn nuts, as they’re sometimes known) could stream “I Say No” from the upcoming Heathers West End cast album, the show today has released a second single – “Seventeen” – along with an accompanying music video!
Seventeen, which comes at a crucial point in the relationship between Carrie Hope Fletcher’s Veronica and Jamie Muscato’s JD, continues the show’s exciting journey from 1988 cult classic film to 2018 West End hit.
I Say No, the heart-breaking and passionate duet between Carrie Hope Fletcher (Veronica) and Jamie Muscato (JD) has officially been released. And the candy store’s doors seem to be open, as accompanying music videos for both songs have also been released!
Writers Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe joined forces with producer Michael Croiter (Heathers: The Musical (World Premiere Cast Recording), Matilda, Groundhog Day) at Livingston Studio and Abbey Road Studios to recreate the musical performances.
Kevin and Laurence said, “‘I Say No’ is an emancipation anthem in which Veronica cuts ties with her homicidal boyfriend. Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the show’s lead producers, suggested we give her an eleven o’clock number to establish her moral clarity by firmly articulating the idea that violence is never a solution to the injustices of high school.”
On Seventeen, they said, “We love when new artists teach us brand new things about songs, we thought we knew. Jamie and Carrie bring enormous empathy and warmth to “Seventeen,” which is a song about hope. This may be our favourite track on the new album.”
Heathers was a beautiful success when it hit the West End like a mallet last year. Initially starting out at The Other Palace, it soon transferred to Theatre Royal Haymarket for a five-month run, with a full house practically every night.
Based on the cult-hit film, the show is set in the school of Westerberg High, where the three Heathers rule the school. Veronica wants to be popular and fit in, but faces challenges along the way; exacerbated by her boyfriend JD who has an unusual way of dealing with people he doesn’t like.
And it won’t be long until you can listen to the whole album until you get brain freeze, as the full version of Heathers the Musical – Original West End Cast Recording will be released on Friday 1 March. Customers who pre-order the digital album will immediately receive a download of both “Seventeen” and “I Say No.”
How very!
