Heap’s Twelfth Night comes to National

Published 13 November 2009

A new production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, aimed at children aged eight and over, will play at the National Theatre from 16 to 27 February.

The production, which is created and directed by Carl Heap, uses just seven actors who play multiple characters and instruments to bring Shakespeare’s dark tale of murder and revenge to life.

Heap is no stranger to producing work for young audiences. His version of Macbeth played at the National Theatre earlier this year and his previous work for the National Theatre’s Education department has included productions of Romeo And Juliet, Pericles and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He also created family shows Jason And The Argonauts for Greenwich theatre and The Unholy And Illustrious History Of St George And The Dragon at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Twelfth Night is the latest show for young audiences to be staged at the National Theatre, following productions of Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat, aimed at three to six-year-olds, and Mark Ravenhill’s family-orientated adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Nation, both of which open this Christmas.
