Tom Stoppard’s Cold War spy drama Hapgood has extended its run at Hampstead Theatre following rave reviews.
Described as a “rollocking spy story” by Time Out in its four star review, Hapgood will now play at the West London theatre until 23 January, adding a further week to its run.
Directed by Olivier Award winner Howard Davies and starring the critically acclaimed stage actor Lisa Dillon, Stoppard’s tense drama tells the story of a female spymaster working in London as The Cold War approaches its endgame. Suspecting someone in her network is leaking secrets, Hapgood sets a trap to discovering if her Double Agent is in fact a Triple Agent.
The production, penned by the playwright whose hits include The Hard Problem, Arcadia, The Real Thing and Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, opened last week when it collected a string of four star reviews. The Independent described Davies’ production as a “wonderfully spry, superbly cast and inflected revival” while The Observer said “You won’t see a better production of Hapgood than this.”
Speaking to Official London Theatre about the show, Dillon also praised director Davies’ role in the production, commenting: “It was only going to be a privilege to play Hapgood but the icing on the cake is working with Howard Davies for the third time. He is an extraordinary director of the finest calibre.”
Hapgood plays prior to the UK premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Rabbit Hole, which arrives at the venue under the direction of Artistic Director Edward Hall from 29 January.
