Hampstead Theatre and Talawa Theatre Company have swiftly come together in the wake of the Haiti earthquake to create an evening of poems, readings and short plays written in response to the disaster, from which all proceeds will go to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
Hosted by actor Don Warrington, An Evening For Haiti, which is to be held tomorrow (27 January), will feature new work by writers including Richard Bean, Juliet Gilkes Romero, Joel Horwood, Anders Lustgarten, Ed Pilkington, Atiha Sen Gupta, Steve Waters and Roy Williams.
The pieces are to be performed by a cast of as yet unannounced actors and will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by playwright and BBC World journalist Romero.
The one night only fundraising show will be directed by Pat Cumper, the Artistic Director of Britain’s leading black-led theatre company, Talawa, who commented: “As a company with a strong connection to the Caribbean, Talawa had no choice but to be part of this Evening For Haiti at Hampstead. Please come, learn, share. We urge you to donate what you can. We feel sure you will leave with a better understanding of Haiti and its remarkable place in world history.”
Hampstead theatre has not set a ticket price for the event. It is instead asking audiences to pay what they can, both to see the show and to help the people of Haiti.
