Edward Hall, Artistic Director of the Hampstead theatre, is to bring his own company Propeller to the North London venue in June with a double bill of The Comedy Of Errors and Richard III.
The shows, which play in repertoire for three weeks from 22 June to 9 July (press day 24 June), mark the first time that Shakespeare’s work has been presented on the Hampstead theatre stage; the venue usually focuses on new writing.
Hall, who is currently presenting his first season as Artistic Director of Hampstead theatre, commented: “I’m very happy to be able to bring Shakespeare to Hampstead for the first time and to bring together the two most important theatre companies in my life for this limited season. New writing should be treated like a classic and classics like new writing: I hope I’ve been able to do just that with these two Shakespeare plays.”
All-male company Propeller is known for its unique interpretations of Shakespeare plays, including The Taming Of The Shrew and Twelfth Night at the Old Vic in 2007.
The Comedy Of Errors and Richard III follow a Hampstead season that includes current show Tiger Country, Enda Walsh’s Penelope, Mike Leigh’s Ecstasy and a new writing residency by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
