Starling Arts, the musical theatre company who helped launch Kids Week last week, is offering families the chance to attend a singing masterclass later this month in an event that, just like Kids Week, offers children the chance to attend for free.
The Saturday Sing will take place between 11:00 and 17:00 on 31 August at St Gabriel’s Halls in Pimlico and offer families with children over the age of eight the chance to learn a selection of fun pop songs and famous show tunes, whether you’re total beginners or the closest thing London has to the Von Trapps!
Talking about the forthcoming event, which offers up to three children’s places free with every full paying adult, Emily Cook, Co-Director of Starling Arts, said: “We are giving families the chance to sing fun music together, from current pop songs to hit numbers from the musicals. We’ve been running youth summer schools, choirs, cabarets and concerts for the past three years but this is the first time we have run a family singing masterclass in a day.”
Last week the company joined forces with the Society of London Theatre, the not-for-profit organisation behind this website, to get 2013’s Kids Week off to an amazing start when it helped 100 children form a special Kids Week choir to perform a medley of popular musical hits alongside West End stars Carrie Hope Fletcher, Marc Antolin, Emma Crossley, Jon Lee, Iain Hornal and Annabelle Brown, raising the roof of Shakespeare’s Globe’s UnderGlobe.
Along with the 100 children who left last week’s Kids Week event excitedly singing their newly learned numbers all the way down the South Bank as they made their way home after the morning of entertainment, a regular singer with the company sung – no pun intended – the praises of group singing when The Saturday Sing was announced, explaining: “Singing together fosters a community… choirs must work together to harmonise and blend their voices – the whole is stronger than its parts.” This theory has proved the foundation for The Saturday Sing, with Starling Arts forming its first day-long family masterclass to not only help improve families’ singing technique, but also to demonstrate the power of coming together to enjoy the pastime as a group.
