Tom Ellis is to star in the European premiere of Nicky Silver’s Broadway hit The Lyons when it opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory later this year.
The Miranda star will be joined in the cast of the Mark Brokaw-directed production, which tells the story of a family gathered at the hospital bedside of their dying father and husband, by Charlotte Randle, Katy Secombe and Ben Aldridge.
While Ellis, who will take on the role of Curtis in Silver’s witty and heart-breaking play, is best known for his television appearances in Miranda Hart’s hit comedy series and BBC soap EastEnders, his theatre credits include One Minute at the Bush theatre and Shang-A-Lang at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Last seen on the London stage in The King’s Speech at the Wyndham’s theatre, Randle’s stage credits include All About My Mother at the Old Vic, and Lobby Hero at the Donmar Warehouse and in the West End, while Secombe has appeared in West End productions including Les Misérables and Mamma Mia!, and Aldridge in productions including Romeo And Juliet at Shakespeare’s Globe.
The Lyons opened on Broadway in 2012 following a successful run Off-Broadway the previous year. An exploration of a fractured family, the production will play at the London Bridge venue from 19 September to 16 November following current hit The Color Purple.
