Duckie return to the Barbican for a crafty Christmas

Published 10 November 2011

The Barbican theatre’s Christmas programme caters for all ages this year with dance show Mojo for younger children and the return of the Olivier Award-winning theatre collective Duckie for older theatregoers.

Children’s theatre company Theatre-Rites present Mojo from 16 December, inviting audiences to set their imaginations free with a celebratory show mixing dance, puppetry and music.

Suitable for children aged five and above, Mojo takes audiences on a journey through the magic and mayhem of growing up. Bursting with energy and evocative movement, objects come to life and characters discover their mojo.

Duckie returns to the Barbican, after the success of the company’s over night adventure Lullaby earlier this year, with Copyright Christmas. With an age guidance of 11+, the interactive show continues the company’s tradition of creating an annual alternative festive show for the East London venue.

Copyright Christmas, which plays from 10 December, looks at conspicuous consumption and branded Britain during the country’s most excessive season. Audiences are invited to step into the Duckie superstore in this promenade performance and meet shopaholics, supermarket sweepers and sweatshop Santas played by over 20 performers.

Running alongside the show, visitors to the Barbican can also enjoy the Duckie Christmas Market which will feature pop-up stalls from small-scale craft makers, local artisan food-makers, DIY designers and underground artists.

If you’re in the mood to be crafty yourself, the company is also hosting weekend Christmas workshops with a variety of artists so you can make your own homespun decorations, cards and wrapping paper.

Mojo and Copyright Christmas run until 31 December.
