The Barbican’s annual Do Something Different Weekend returns this year from 6 to 7 March offering two days of fun activities and performances for all the family.
The interactive weekend, which takes place in and around the Barbican Centre’s foyers, features several participatory events suitable for both children and adults, including Home Sweet Home, which invites you to help build a cardboard community. After fulfilling your property-owning dreams by buying a cardboard house for as little as £1, you are encouraged to interact with your new neighbours, check out the local amenities and take part in a street party on Sunday afternoon. A ticket to Home Sweet Home allows you to come and go over the weekend and watch your community expand.
As in previous years, dance is a major part of Do Something Different. Bells, by Akademi, is a contemporary dance show based on Kathak and Indian dance styles, performed by a cast of international dancers in the Barbican foyers. Visitors can try this dance for themselves later in the day in a special Rajistani Folk Dance workshop, while others may prefer the Bollywood Dance workshop. The Asian-inspired theme continues with two artistic workshops where participants can make Indian lanterns and South Asian flower garlands.
The weekend also features a free drumming workshop where children and their families can join members of drumming groups Pulse and iCan on the Barbican Theatre stage.
