Lisa D’Amour’s Detroit, first staged by Chicago’s Steppenwolf theatre company in 2010, is to receive a London premiere at the National Theatre in 2012.
D’Amour’s drama, the tale of a suburban barbeque that descends into something far more dangerous and volatile, will be performed by a new British cast when it runs at the National’s Cottesloe theatre, but will once again be directed by Austin Pendleton who directed the original Steppenwolf production.
The National Theatre’s production of Detroit will be the second time in four years that a piece originally staged by the acclaimed US theatre company has piqued the interest of the National Theatre’s Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner and his colleagues on the South Bank. In 2008, Steppenwolf’s August: Osage County transferred to the National Theatre after dominating the Tony Awards’ drama categories.
Exact dates for Detroit’s run at the National Theatre are yet to be confirmed.
