Dame Judi Dench will not perform her role in Madame De Sade this weekend after injuring her ankle.
The star, who opened in the Donmar Warehouse production of Yukio Mishima’s play at the Wyndham’s theatre on Wednesday night, sprained her ankle on leaving the theatre after last night’s performance.
A Donmar spokesperson said: “As Judi Dench was leaving the theatre last night she tripped at the stage door and fell. She was taken to A&E where she was diagnosed with a severely sprained ankle. Doctors have advised that she bring no weight to bear on her foot for the time being. As a consequence, Judi’s role of Madame de Montreuil will be performed this weekend by her understudy Marjorie Hayward. The Donmar and Judi apologise for any upset or inconvenience this may cause, and wish to reassure those with tickets that it is her intention to return to the role next week.”
The third production in the Donmar West End season, Madame De Sade examines the life of the notorious Marquis De Sade through the eyes of six women in his life – three real and three imagined. Multi Laurence Olivier Award-winning actress Dench, who plays the mother-in-law of the Marquis, stars in Michael Grandage’s production alongside Rosamund Pike, Frances Barber and Deborah Findlay.
