Did you miss the Olivier Award-winning run of Follies at the National Theatre last year? Well, put those regrets behind you because you’ll have another chance.

This week the National Theatre announced its new season, and as part of it, Follies will be returning to the Olivier Theatre in 2019. The previously sold-out show will play from 14 February to 26 March 2019, with press night on February 2019. Further performances will be announced at a later date. Also announced is Janie Dee and Peter Forbes’ return to the show to reprise their roles. Further casting is yet to be announced.

Set in New York in 1971, Follies takes place at a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. The following day, the iconic building will be demolished. 30 years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves.

In addition to Stephen Sondheim’s sensational musical, National Theatre announced that new musical, Hadestown will open at National Theatre in November. Anaïs Mitchell’s show has had record-breaking runs at New York Theatre Workshop and Canada’s Citadel Theatre and is coming to London before undertaking a Broadway run.

Hadestown is an adaptation of a concept album written by Anaïs’. Developed by Rachel Chavkin, the genre-defying musical mixes American folk music with jazz to tell the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. It will run from 2 November to 26 January, with press night on 13 November.

Additional casting for the upcoming Exit the King was also announced. Joining Rhys Ifans and Indira Varma will be Adrian Scarborough, Debra Gillett, Derek Griffiths and Amy Morgan.
