The Young Vic theatre has announced that Carrie Cracknell, Daniel Kramer and Sacha Wares will join the company as Associate Directors.

All three join on an initial period of one year that will see them direct their own productions, contribute to the planning and programming of the theatre, work with the theatre’s outreach department and mentor participants in the Young Vic Director’s Programme.

Cracknell will also continue in her role as co-Artistic Director of the Gate theatre, where she has directed productions including Hedda, Armageddon and I Am Falling, which was nominated for a South Bank Show Award.

Already an Associate Director at the Royal Court, a role she will also continue to play, Wares’s previous productions include My Child, Random and Guantanamo: Honor Bound To Defend Freedom.

American director Kramer is already a regular face at the Young Vic, where he has directed the English National Opera co-production Punch And Judy and Sadler’s Wells co-production Pictures From An Exhibition. Away from the Young Vic, his diverse list of productions includes Rufus Wainwright’s opera Prima Donna, Prick Up You Ears and Headlong’s production of the seven-hour epic Angels In America.

Speaking about the appointments, the Young Vic’s Artistic Director David Lan said: “The Young Vic has always responded to the complexity of our world and the multiplicity of our identities by producing a diverse and eclectic programme. It’s a major enhancement to have these brilliant and provocative directors at the heart of our thinking, our dreaming and our producing.”

The theatre’s current Associate Director, Joe Hill-Gibbins, who will stage the first major London revival of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen Of Leenane this July, is to become Deputy Artistic Director. He has also been named the first Genesis Fellow at the Young Vic, a role made possible by a two-year grant from the Genesis Foundation.
