Simon Callow’s one-man show Being Shakespeare will return to the Trafalgar Studios 1 in March for a strictly limited season before the critically-acclaimed show crosses the pond for a US tour.
Written by Shakespeare biographer Jonathan Bate, Being Shakespeare transferred into the West End last summer following a successful UK tour and Edinburgh Fringe Festival run in 2010. The show will return for 30 performances from 7 to 31 March.
In Being Shakespeare, Callow brings to life a collection of the legendary playwright’s most memorable characters, as well as exploring the man behind some of the world’s most famous plays. The Guardian’s Michael Billington described the production as: “a memorably multidimensional picture of Shakespeare, steeped in scholarship and love”.
Callow can currently be seen at the Arts theatre in A Christmas Carol, which is directed by Being Shakespeare’s Tom Cairns. The actor is a Shakespeare veteran having acted in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Merry Wives The Musical and Peter Hall’s recent production of Twelfth Night at the National Theatre, as well as starring in the fictional romantic hit film Shakespeare In Love.
Well known for his screen performances, Callow has appeared in films including Amadeus, Four Weddings And A Funeral and A Room With A View. His other numerous stage credits include Waiting For Godot, alongside Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman In White.
Being Shakespeare follows Second World War drama Three Days In May, which plays until 3 March at the Trafalgar Studios 1.
