British talent shines at Tony Awards last night

The 2022 Tony Awards were last night, and after a lot of excitement and speculation, the winners are in!

Back in person at Radio City Music Hall for the first time since the pandemic, the ceremony was hosted by West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose, who called it “the first Tony awards since Broadway got its groove back”. The night was once again a glittering celebration of the best on and off-stage talent on Broadway.

It was a big night for British performers and creatives this year, with British talent and transfers taking some of the biggest awards. The whole event kicked off with an opening number co-written Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, which smashed together music and 

choreography from iconic musicals on Broadway across the ages into one mega musical hit.

Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss won the award for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre for the music and lyrics of Six The Musical, which transferred over to Broadway last year, making Lucy the youngest ever female director on Broadway! Toby’s win also made them the First Nonbinary Composer-Lyricist to Win Best Score in Tonys history. Gabrielle Slade was also awarded for her iconic costume design.

The Lehman Trilogy by Stefano Massini and Ben Power won Best Play. The Olivier Award-winning production was a transfer from the National Theatre, and saw a second win for Best Direction for Sam Mendes. Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester were all nominated for Best Actor in a Play for their roles, with Simon taking the Tiny home. Es Devlin also won for her scenic design of the play, and Jon Clark for his lighting design.

Another big winner of the night was Company. Marianne Elliot took home the Tony for her Olivier Award-winning direction; Best Performance in a Featured Role in a Musical Awards went to both Matt Doyle and Patti LuPone; Bunny Christie won Best Scenic Design of a Musical and the whole production won the award for Best Musical Revival.

Simon Hale also won Best Orchestrations for Girl From The North Country, which originated at the Old Vic back in 2017. Simon won an Olivier this year too, for his orchestrations for Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical. Gareth Owen, who was nominated for an Olivier Award this year for his sound design of Back To The Future The Musical, won Best Sound Design of a Musical for MJ, which also picket up the Tony for Best Choreography for fellow Brit Christopher Wheeldon.
