Trevor Nunn is heading back to the Menier Chocolate Factory this July and with him, he’s bringing the European premiere of The Bridges Of Madison County.
Following the critically acclaimed and sold-out run of Fiddler On The Roof – which is now playing at the Playhouse Theatre – Nunn is directing the musical of Robert James Waller’s bestselling novel.
The Bridges Of Madison County tells the tale of Francesca – an Italian immigrant housewife living a happy existence on a farm in the American Midwest. However, when her family go off to the Iowa State Fair, she meets Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer on assignment filming bridges in the area. Their initial friendship develops into a brief but passionate affair which has devastating consequences on all of their lives.
The show was originally adapted by Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman in 2014 and it earned Jason Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
Jason Robert Brown is the award-winning composer and lyricist behind 13, The Last Five Years, Parade, Honeymoon In Vegas, Songs For A New World, and Urban Cowboy – which he co-wrote with Jeff Blumenkrantz.
Marsha Norman is a prolific playwright and screenwriter whose credits include Master Butcher’s Singing Club, Third And Oak: The Laundromat, Night, Mother, The Secret Garden, The Red Shoes, The Color Purple, Getting Out, and many more.
Trevor Nunn was the youngest ever Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Among his giant cannon of work is Les Misérables, Troilus And Cressida, Oklahoma!, The Merchant Of Venice, Summerfolk, My Fair Lady, A Streetcar Named Desire, Anything Goes, and Love’s Labour’s Lost.
The production opens on 23 July, with previews from 12 July, and runs until 14 September. Booking opens to the general public on Monday 13 May.
