Torben Betts’ new play Invincible will transfer to the St James Theatre this summer following an acclaimed run at the Orange Tree Theatre.

The comedy, which was presented in-the-round at the Richmond venue earlier this year, will be restaged for its run at the St James Theatre from 10 July (press night 15 July) to 9 August.

Directed by Ellie Jones, Invincible tells the story of a couple who trade in their middle-class London lifestyle for a small town in northern England. Having moved to their new home, Emily and Oliver invite their neighbours over for an evening of olives, anchovies and cultural conversation, but classes soon begin to collide, leading to consequences that are both hilarious and tragic.

After receiving its world premiere in March, the show was described by The Guardian’s Michael Billington as a “domestic comedy [that] is used to explore both topical and timeless questions”. The critic also praised the play’s direction, saying “Jones not only directs with a nice eye for class nuance, but links the scenes with wild dances that hint at the characters’ inner lives.”

The original cast, which comprises Midsomer Murders’ Laura Howard, former Coronation Street actress Samantha Seager, Daniel Copeland and Darren Strange, will transfer with the production.

Invincible will open following Stella Feehily’s play about one family’s journey through the digestive system of the NHS, This May Hurt A Bit, which begins previews tonight and runs until 9 August.
