This summer’s run of Tony Award-winning hit Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill has been postponed following the announcement its star Audra McDonald is expecting a baby.
The Broadway hit had been due to run at the Wyndham’s Theatre from 25 June, and producers have confirmed revised dates for a later run will be announced soon.
McDonald, who won her sixth Tony Award for her portrayal of legendary singer Billie Holiday in the New York run, commented on her and her husband Will Swenson’s news, saying: “Who knew that tap dancing during perimenopause could lead to pregnancy? Will and I are completely surprised—and elated—to be expecting a new addition to our family. I am so very grateful to everyone in New York and London for allowing me to rearrange my schedule to accommodate this little miracle.
“Of course, I’m disappointed I have to postpone my West End debut in Lady Day, but I look forward to rescheduling as soon as possible.”
The actor, who is currently appearing the Broadway production Shuffle Along, was due to make her long awaited West End debut in the London transfer of Lanie Robertson’s critically acclaimed musical drama that takes audiences through the life, loves and losses of Holliday’s staggering story.
The chance to see McDonald perform many of the singer’s most iconic hits will no doubt make the wait for a rescheduled run well worth it for theatre fans.
Ticket purchasers are advised to contact the Box Office or their supplier to arrange a refund.
