If you’re a fan of Sherlock actor, Andrew Scott, (and let’s face it, who isn’t!), then you’ll be delighted to hear he’s going to be returning to the West End stage in June.
Andrew will be starring in Noёl Coward’s provocative comedy, Present Laughter, at The Old Vic between 17 June –10 August 2019.
The comedy follows Garry Essendine, a successful and self-obsessed actor who’s about to go on tour to Africa. But preparing for his big trip doesn’t prove to be simple, as he faces farcical events including coping with a young playwright, battling off the affections of women who fancy him, dealing with his estranged wife, and overcoming an incoming mid-life crisis.
The rest of the cast includes Luke Thallon, Sophie Thompson, Suzie Toase and Indira Varma, and they will be directed by Matthew Warchus.
Matthew said: “Noël Coward’s most autobiographical work is a giddy and passionate observation of narcissism, hero worship and loneliness. Most of my favourite plays are comedies with added emotional dimensions and Present Laughter is a laugh-out-loud sex comedy with, I think, surprising depths. I’m delighted to be working with Andrew Scott again (after collaborating on the film Pride), together with what promises to be a cast of outstanding comic actors.”
Andrew was last seen in Theatreland in June last year, when he starred in Sea Wall as part of The Old Vic’s 200th anniversary.
Andrew has appeared in a range of theatrical productions which have won him critical acclaim. This includes in Hamlet (Almeida Theatre), which got him an Olivier Award nomination, and A Girl In A Car With A Man, where he won an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre. He’s also known for his BAFTA-winning portrayal of the villainous Moriarty in BBC’s Sherlock, and is currently starring in the hit-TV show Fleabag.
Present Laughter will run between 17 June –10 August. Public tickets will go on sale on Monday 25 March.
