Stomp, which is packing up its dustbins at the Vaudeville on 23 September after a run of five years, will not be leaving the West End. Instead, the show will move to the Ambassadors – vacant when Little Shop Of Horrors closes this Saturday – from the end of September, with a press night on 4 October.
The show, created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, opened at the Vaudeville on 25 September 2002 and has enjoyed half a decade at the venue. A mixture of theatre, dance, comedy and percussion, Stomp uses everything including the kitchen sink to create a rhythmic spectacle.
Stomp had been due to take a short break from the West End, returning in spring 2008, but, in a statement, Cresswell and McNicholas said they decided to reopen the show at the Ambassadors after noting the resemblance of the theatre to New York’s Orpheum theatre, where a production of Stomp has been running for 15 years.
McNicholas commented: “The Ambassadors has all the qualities that we and our audiences have come to appreciate at the Orpheum, including an intimate atmosphere and fantastic acoustics.”
Stomp is booking at the Ambassadors until March 2008.
Meanwhile, the Vaudeville hosts the premiere production of Swimming With Sharks, which sees Christian Slater play movie producer and boss from hell Buddy Ackerman. Helen Baxendale and Matt Smith also star in this comic drama about the cut throat world of Hollywood.
