Little Shop Of Horrors, the Menier Chocolate Factory transfer currently playing at the Ambassadors, is closing in the West End on 8 September prior to a national tour.
This revival of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s musical opened at the off-West End Menier Chocolate Factory in November last year. It subsequently transferred to the Duke Of York’s in March, moving to its current home, the Ambassadors, in June.
The musical tells the story of Seymour, a lowly florist's assistant who dreams of a better life for him and the girl he secretly loves, Audrey. When Seymour finds an exotic plant, the fortunes of Mushnik’s florist shop pick up – but soon it becomes clear that Audrey II, as Seymour names the plant, is not all it seems. With a penchant for human blood and plans for world domination, the talking plant leads Seymour down a dark and disturbing path…
The show stars Paul Keating (Seymour), Sheridan Smith (Audrey), Barry James (Mr Mushnik) and Alistair McGowan as the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, plus Mike McShane – who is hosting today’s Kids Week Covent Garden – as the voice of Audrey II.
Based on Roger Corman’s 1960s black comedy The Little Shop Of Horrors, Menken and Ashman’s musical version first opened off-Broadway in 1982, receiving its London premiere in 1983 at the Comedy. A film version was released in 1986 with a cast of funny men including Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.
A UK tour of this new production is planned for 2008.
