Immersive theatre fans are invited to sleepover with the murderous Macbeths in a unique overnight experience spanning 12 hours at a secret East London location this summer.
Running on Friday and Saturdays from 20 June to 16 August, theatre company RIFT will take audiences on a journey from 20:00 to 08:00, inspired by and staged in a “brutalist architectural masterpiece”.
Within this site-specific location, audiences will be invited to face Shakespeare’s witches in an underground car park, drink and feast with the story’s infamous villains and victims, and even take a restful – or not so restful we’d guess – sleep on the 27th floor.
Directed by Felix Mortimer and designed by Joshua Nawras, the tower block-staged piece will allow participants to fully immerse themselves into the dark world of Shakespeare’s tale. Packed with secrets, bloody murder and terrifying ghosts, the show will culminate in an incredible view of the sunrise as dawn breaks on an experience floating somewhere between dystopia and utopia.
Likely to divide theatregoers as to whether it falls in the ‘exciting’ or ‘terrifying’ bracket, audiences won’t be able to control whether they are woken up by the ghost of Macduff or Lady Macbeth’s rants, however they will be able to decide how they bed down for the night.
With the choice of three packages, audiences can choose from the most basic – bringing your own sleeping bag, pillow and mat – up to the deluxe option, which will include “the softest bed in all of Borduria” and even breakfast in the morning.
Macbeth will be suitable for ages 14+. Visit RIFT’s website for full details.
