Big news to spice up your Friday morning. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Steve Pemberton are set to star in the West End premiere of Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed The Pillowman which will open in the summer this year.
The multi-award-winning playwright has practically all the awards any writer could wish for. The writer behind the Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, as well as In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and Six Shooter, is also a BAFTA and Olivier winner. This production will see McDonagh reuniting with director Matthew Dunster – the pairing behind the highly-acclaimed Hangmen.
The Pillowman is set in a totalitarian state where a Writer is questioned by the authorities about a spate of murders that bear similarities to his short stories. Is this life imitating art or something more sinister? This black comedy examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price do we pay for the freedom of expression.
The Pillowman won the Olivier Award for Best New Play for its run at the National Theatre in 2004.
As a special initiative, the producers are also thrilled that they will be making tickets available for every performance on a “Pay What You Can” scheme. James Bierman (Empire Street Productions) said, ”I really hope that with this play, this cast and for this production, we can welcome both established and new playgoers into the West End and that this pricing accessibility will give those audiences the thrill of live theatre at its very best.”
The brand new production of the iconic play will run for 12 weeks only and will open on 24 July at The Duke Of York’s Theatre.
