Trevor Nunn’s revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music has extended its run at the Garrick theatre until 5 September ahead of an intended Broadway transfer.
The production originated at the Menier Chocolate Factory last year before transferring to the Garrick in March. It had been booking to 25 July.
David Babani, Artistic Director of the Menier, commented: “It is with great excitement that we are able to announce further London performances of Trevor Nunn’s Chocolate Factory production of A Little Night Music. Since its original opening in December last year, the production has played to packed houses both at the Chocolate Factory and the Garrick theatre, and discussions are currently underway for a Broadway production to open later this year.”
Based on Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles Of A Summer Night, Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s 1973 musical A Little Night Music is set in 19th century Sweden and centres on the romantic entanglements of four couples during a long weekend at a country house.
Hannah Waddingham leads the cast of Nunn’s revival as the glamorous actress Desiree Armfeldt, alongside Maureen Lipman as Madame Armfeldt, Alexander Hanson as Fredrik Egerman, Kelly Price as the Countess and Jessie Buckley as Anne Egerman.
A Little Night Music is the sixth production to transfer to the West End from the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark, which recently celebrated its fifth birthday. The venue’s production of La Cage Aux Folles is currently playing at the West End’s Playhouse theatre. Its production of another Sondheim musical, Sunday In The Park With George, transferred to Broadway after a West End run and was nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2008.
