Uncle Vanya, Chekhov’s masterpiece of frustrated longing and wasted lives was written in 1899. Its first production was directed by Stanislavski. It has been much revived, the title role having achieved the status of a modern Hamlet.

Young Vic associate director Joe Hill-Gibbins directs a workshop production of Anton Chekhov’s tragic comedy Uncle Vanya for 11 performances only.

Hill-Gibbins recently directed The Girlfriend Experience, which played at the Young Vic this summer following its transfer from the Royal Court. His previous work at the venue includes Rory Bremner’s translation of Brecht’s A Respectable Wedding. For the Royal Court he has directed Family Plays and Bliss.

This production of Uncle Vanya aims to research and explore the contemporary implications of the story. It is a workshop production offering a rare chance to see work in development at the Young Vic.
