Rupert Goold directs a new version of Puccini’s final opera, Turandot, which promises to explore the psychological impact of the erotic and the relationship between sex and death that is at the heart of the piece.

Turandot is Goold’s debut production for English National Opera. The director has been one of the most sought after in the theatrical world in recent years, with productions including the multi-award winning Macbeth, The Tempest (both starring Patrick Stewart), No Man’s Land, Six Characters In Search Of An Author, King Lear, Time And The Conways and Oliver!. He is joined in the production team by ENO’s Music Director Edward Gardner, who conducts.

German soprano Kirsten Blanck makes her UK stage debut in this production, playing the man-hating ‘ice princess’ Turandot, alongside Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones, who makes his role debut as Calaf.

Turandot is the latest Puccini opera to be reinvented for the ENO, following Anthony Minghella’s Madam Butterfly and Jonathan Miller’s La Boheme.
