British composer Julian Anderson and playwright Frank McGuinness unite for this compelling retelling of Sophocles’ timeless tragedy.
Focusing on the fate of Oedipus and his daughter Antigone, Thebans sees murder, incest, political ambition, love, loyalty, hatred and revenge drive everyone on a collision course that can only lead to catastrophe.
Thebans marks Anderson’s first opera. He is best known for his fresh melodic gifts, vivid orchestrations and rhythmic drive, demonstrated most recently in his recent orchestral showpieces, which have included The Discovery Of Heaven and Harmony.
Irish playwright McGuinness is acclaimed for his translations of works by Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg and Sophocles, and his one-woman play The Match Box played at the Tricycle Theatre last year.
