To mark its 60th Anniversary, UCOpera presents The Three Pintos by Weber and Mahler.
A comic opera set in Spain, The Three Pintos is full of the farce and intrigue surrounding a loveless betrothal of marriage. No less than three men turn up at the wedding claiming to be Don Pinto the bridegroom. But the bride, Donna Clarissa, knows exactly which Pinto she really loves…
With a production updated to the stylish early 1960s, this operatic gem is UCOpera’s contribution to this year’s Mahler Centenary. It is the extraordinary fruit of a unique collaboration between Carl Maria von Weber, the original composer, and Gustave Mahler who completed the opera 63 years later. As Weber’s melodic genius met the young Mahler’s genius for orchestration, the result was a timeless and charming comedy of a fortune-hunting student, a star-crossed lover, a discontented heiress, a publican’s glamorous daughter, some very clever servants, an eccentric patriarch and Don Pinto himself, the clumsiest lover in all of Spain.
Professional opera singers perform alongside the cream of UCOpera in the lead roles as well as the justly acclaimed UCOpera Chorus and Orchestra.
An enchanting and tuneful farce that was hugely popular in Mahler’s lifetime, UCOpera once more brings a rarely-heard masterpiece back into the public eye and ear.
