In his final production as Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Dominic Dromgoole directs the last of his indoor Shakespearean quartet at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, The Tempest, in a tale of exile, enlightenment and atonement.

When the Duke of Milan, Prospero, is usurped and banished by his own brother, he is comforted by his effervescent daughter Miranda, the spirit Ariel and Caliban, a “savage and deformed” slave. Ruling over an enchanted island, he plots revenge in the form of a fierce storm to entrap this brother and his confederates on the island by shipwreck, with retribution finally in reach.

Broadly considered one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Tempest summons a magical and supernatural world into the intimate setting of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, immersing the audience in a tale of forgiveness, generosity and catharsis.
