Florian Zeller’s remarkable trilogy of plays culminates in The Son, transferring to the West End following the smash-hit successes of The Father and The Mother.
Translated once again by Christopher Hampton, The Son premiered in London at the Kiln Theatre earlier this year, directed by Michael Longhurst. Now, the full cast – comprising Amanda Abbington, Laurie Kynaston, John Light and Amaka Okafor – reprise their acclaimed performances as the show plays at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End.
The Son follows Nicolas, at the eye of a storm following his parents’ divorce. Listless and lost, Nicolas skips school, lies, and pushes to move in with his father and his new family. When that doesn’t work out, he decides to move back into his mother’s. But what if that doesn’t work out… and Nicolas is out of options? Exploring Nicolas’ feeling that change is the only way to survive, The Son is a compulsive and emotionally stirring masterpiece.
The production marks the first West End transfer for the Kiln Theatre since its triumphant reopening in September 2018. The show features design by Lizzie Clachan, lighting by Lee Curran, composition and sound by Isobel Waller-Bridge, and casting by Amy Ball.
Laurie Kynaston leads the cast as Nicolas. Laurie is no stranger to the West End, having previously starred in the Olivier Award-winning play The Ferryman. He is joined by Amanda Abbington (best known for playing Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge and Mary Morstan in the BBC’s Sherlock) as Anne, while John Light (Mary Stuart, West End) plays Pierre and Amaka Okafor (I’m Not Running, National Theatre) plays Sofia.
Along with The Son, The Father and The Mother, playwright Florian Zeller’s works have seen him scoop several Molière Awards, as well as the prestigious Prix Interallié in 2004 (Fascination Of Evil). Regular West End theatregoers will also recognise his works La Vérité (The Truth) and Avant De S’envoler (The Height Of The Storm). The Father is currently being adapted into a feature film with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, which Zeller himself will direct.
So don’t miss out on The Son, the final part of Florian Zeller’s immaculate dramatic trilogy – and the most powerful of all.
