Korean-American playwright Young Jean Lee set herself the most uncomfortable challenge she could concoct, to write a play about African American identity and politics, The Shipment.
Working with an all black cast, she created a piece that takes audiences through assumptions, clichés and distortions, using minstrel show style numbers to parody cultural caricatures.
The Shipment plays at The Barbican as part of LIFT 2014. It is suitable for theatregoers aged 16 and older.
