English National Opera and the Young Vic team up for a fourth year on a new version of Monteverdi’s epic opera, The Return Of Ulysses.
Monteverdi’s 1640 opera The Return Of Ulysses is based on the final section of Homer’s Odyssey. Ulysses returns home to Ithaca after his long journey back from the Trojan Wars to find villainous suitors have plundered his home and seized his wife, Queen Penelope. Aided by the Gods, his son Telemachus and faithful friend Eumaeus, he must overcome the suitors and recover his kingdom.
Monteverdi is recognised as the first great composer of opera. His work includes L’Orfeo, L’Arianna and The Coronation Of Poppea.
