David Bintley’s imaginative reworking of this classic fairytale celebrates the power of family love.
Featuring costumes from War Horse designer Rae Smith and inspired by Benjamin Britten’s only full-length ballet score, The Prince Of The Pagodas tells the story of Princess Sakura as she mourns the death of her brother and the slow disintegration of her father, the emperor, whose wife takes control of his kingdom.
Sakura has no lack of wealthy suitors, but the true love she felt for her brother gives her the confidence to reject them. Determined not to follow her evil stepmother’s request, when a fifth suitor arrives she throws herself on his mercy.
The Prince Of The Pagodas opened to acclaim in Japan in 2011. Its London premiere marks the culmination of the Britten centenary celebrations.
