JM Synge’s comic masterpiece, The Playboy Of The Western World, is set in a small village on the west coast of County Mayo, where lonely dreamer Christy Mahon takes refuge in a pub. Claiming that he has killed his oppressive father, he regales locals with tales of courage in the face of danger, charming the village women and capturing the affection of the landlord’s daughter. But when there appears to be more to his tale than meets the eye, the mood of the locals changes.
The Playboy Of The Western World premiered at the Abbey theatre, Dublin in 1907, provoking riots in the audience. It was last seen at the Old Vic in 1975 and was revived at the National Theatre in 2001.
Robert Sheehan, who leads the cast of The Playboy Of The Western World, was BAFTA-nominated for his performance in acclaimed E4 series Misfits. He has also appeared in the TV adaptation of the Red Riding Trilogy and the film Killing Bono.
