The Mikado is the London Coliseum’s 25th anniversary revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s musical and satirical masterpiece, The Mikado, enjoyed the longest initial run of any of their collaborations and was the first Savoy Opera to chalk up 1,000 performances. Nearly rivalling that record, Jonathan Miller’s inspired and much-loved production, which wittily and wickedly transposes the topsy-turvy orientalism of the Town of Titipu to the faintly seedy grandeur of a very English, very 1930s seaside hotel, has proved a lasting ‘source of innocent merriment’ for audiences ever since it first graced the London Coliseum stage in 1986.
For this celebratory 25th anniversary revival, Peter Robinson conducts a stellar cast led by Alfie Boe and Sophie Bevan, making their role debuts as Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum, with veteran stalwarts Richard Angas and Richard Suart as the amiably grotesque Mikado and his pathologically list-making Lord High Executioner.
