A mercurial mix of fairy-tale adventure, knockabout farce, moral allegory and, above all, marvellous music, Mozart’s The Magic Flute was premiered just 10 weeks before the composer’s tragically early death. It proved to be the biggest popular success of his short life, as well as arguably the most deeply moving of all his operas.
