Director Peter Sellars re-works Purcell’s final unfinished opera The Indian Queen, blending music with theatre, dance, literature and visual art.
Using Rosario Aguilar’s The Lost Chronicles Of Terra Firma as his inspiration, Sellars has created a tale about the first confrontations between the Europeans and the Mayans from a unique female perspective.
Using Puccini’s original music, and incorporating many of the composer’s stunning religious anthems, Sellars has finished an unfinished work. Design is provided by LA-based graffiti artist Gronk.
Young soprano Julia Bullock leads the cast in a role created for her by the director.
The Indian Queen is sung in English.
