The Royal Opera presents the first UK staging of Irish composer Gerald Barry’s gleefully inventive opera The Importance Of Being Earnest. The work had its concert premiere in London in 2012 and was met with huge acclaim.
Barry’s hyperactive score storms through a range of genres: everything from modernism to avant-garde to baroque. Memorable moments include Gwendolen and Cecily’s battle of wits performed through megaphones, to the accompaniment of 40 rhythmically smashed plates. Director Ramin Gray brings this virtuosic opera to the Linbury Studio Theatre in a wonderfully spirited production.
