Masterpieces by George Balanchine and Kenneth MacMillan frame a world premiere from Hofesh Shechter in this thrilling mixed programme from the Royal Ballet.
The mixed bill marks the first time that Hofesh Shechter’s charged, highly politicised choreography has been seen at the Royal Opera House.
Described by MacMillan as “A man and a woman; death takes the man; they both return to her and at the end of the ballet, we find that in death there is the promise of renewal”, Song Of The Earth is an astounding meditation on loss and renewal set to Mahler’s Das Lied Von Der Erde.
Balanchine’s epoch-making The Four Temperaments is as fresh, vibrant and modern today as it was at its 1946 premiere. Renowned as one of his greatest works, it is based on the medieval theory of its title, which comprises Melancholic (sad, pensive), Sanguinic (confident), Phlegmatic (impassive) and Choleric (angry).
