Katie Mitchell directs Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens’ new version of Anton Chekhov’s play about a family intent on resisting the loss of their ancestral home.

One of Chekhov’s most critically performed plays, The Cherry Orchard focuses on the family as they tremble on the brink of seismic social changes and an old world order threatens to crumble around them, painting a vivid portrait of a culture in violent transition.

Stephens, who returns to the Young Vic following the success of A Doll’s House, which enjoyed two acclaimed runs at the Southwark venue before transferring to the West End, is the Olivier Award-winning playwright behind current West End hit The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and 2005’s On The Shore Of The Wide World.

Katie Mitchell directs The Cherry Orchard following her productions of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya at the Young Vic, and Three Sisters, Ivanov and The Seagull at the National Theatre.
