Taken At Midnight, which stars Penelope Wilton, was first a hit at Chichester Festival Theatre.

The debut play by Mark Hayhurst, it tells a story set in 1931, when celebrated lawyer Hans Litten makes a dangerous move during the trial of a group of murderous SA men. He calls Herr Hitler to the witness stand and lets him feel the full force of his thinking and wit.

Two years later, on the night of the Reichstag fire, Hitler has his revenge. Litten is arrested, held without trial and put through hell. At huge personal risk, his mother, Irmgard, confronts the men who have taken her son captive.

Taken At Midnight was written with Wilton in mind for the role of Irmgard. The award-winning actress, a familiar face from hit costume drama Downton Abbey, returns to the West End for the first time in five years with the production.

Playwright Hayhurst also wrote the BBC World War I factual drama series 37 Days.
