Super Everything* is a cross disciplinary performing arts project, commissioned by the British Council and created by leading audio-visual artists The Light Surgeons in collaboration with a group of Malaysian artists and string players from the Heritage Orchestra. Violinist, producer and film-maker Zan Lyons will open the evening.
Filmed on location across Peninsular Malaysia, this live audio-visual performance explores the relationship between identity, ritual and place. Super Everything* weaves different documentary narratives to create a poetic audio-visual tapestry, that together forms a kaleidoscopic portrait of the culturally diverse landscape of Malaysia. Juxtaposing tradition and modernity, this project seeks to discover how our complex sense of identity is formed through rituals. Super Everything* brings together a cutting-edge collection of the UK’s and Malaysia’s leading musical and visual artists to form this unique audio-visual collaboration. The resulting soundscape combines traditional South East Asian instruments, western classical compositions, field recordings and electronic synthesis, all of which are manipulated live and complemented by an stunning, immersive visual experience.
Exploded across multiple projections and different media, this live cinema performance layers together stunning documentary footage and motion graphics with a original, live electronic musical score to transport its audiences on a journey through this most universal narrative.
From our relationships with each other to our relationship with the environment, Super Everything* surveys our everyday rituals to reveal what unites and divides us. It is a journey through Malaysia’s past, to understand its present and to question its future.
This is a project that aims to elevate its audience to contemplate our shared human story in order to reveal our collective commonality, and asks a timeless question about who we are as individuals and as a society.
