Stunning audiences with its spell-binding, stripped-back staging, Tennessee Williams’ rarely staged classic Summer And Smoke transfers to the West End due to popular demand.

The production played a widely lauded run at the Almeida Theatre earlier in 2018, and now makes the move to the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre. The full original cast reprise their roles.

Set in small-town Mississippi, Summer And Smoke is an absorbing classic about love, loneliness and self-destruction, in which Alma, seemingly under the wings of an angel, meets John – and their worlds are turned upside down. Evoking the simmering passions of a sweltering summer, the duo soon find themselves trapped between fear, obligation – and their own sheer desire.

An innovative new production directed by Rebecca Frecknall, Summer And Smoke is a rarely seen gem amongst Williams’ best-known poetic and provocative writing (which includes the likes of The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof).

Patsy Ferran (Critics’ Circle Theatre Award-winner for Most Promising Newcomer in 2014) stars as Alma, alongside Matthew Needham (The Twilight Zone, Almeida) as John Buchanan. The cast also includes Seb Carrington (other recent credits including The Crown), Nancy Crane (Against, Almeida), Eric MacLennan (The Night Manager), Forbes Masson (Big Fish, The Other Palace), Tok Stephen (Boudica, Shakespeare’s Globe) and Anjana Vasan (King Lear, Shakespeare’s Globe).

Summer And Smoke is designed by Tom Scutt, with lighting by Lee Curran, sound by Carolyn Downing, composition by Angus MacRae and casting by Julia Horan. The West End transfer of Summer And Smoke is produced by the Almeida Theatre and Sonia Friedman Productions.
