Athol Fugard’s Tony Award nominated play about the struggle for freedom and identity in apartheid-era South Africa returns to the Young Vic following a sold-out season in 2013.
Set in 1970s Port Elizabeth, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead tells the story of the title character, whose passbook gives him only three days to find work before he is deported. Four days later, he stumbles across a dead body with a passbook, raising the question, does he really need an identity card to define him and can he give up his family in order to survive?
Directed by Matthew Xia, the production unravels the brutal absurdities of everyday life under oppression and features performances from Sibusiso Mamba and Tonderai Munyevu.
