Set in 1970s Port Elizabeth, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead is Athol Fugard’s Tony Award nominated play about the struggle for freedom and identity in apartheid-era South Africa.
The play tells the story of the title character whose passbook gives him only three days to find work before he is deported. Four days later, he stumbles across a dead body with a passbook, raising the question does he really need an identity card to define him and can he give up his family in order to survive?
Directed by Matthew Xia, Sizwe Banzi I Dead unravels the brutal absurdities of everyday life under oppression and is the second play in the Young Vic’s season by South African playwright Athol Fugard.
