Rex Pickett’s beloved wine country-set novel is adapted for the stage, as midlife-crisis comedy Sideways arrives at London’s St James Theatre for its UK and European premiere.
Based on the book that inspired the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning film, and directed by David Grindley, Sideways follows two best friends, Miles and Jack, as they delve into the depths of Santa Barbara for a week of fine wine tasting and companionship.
A neurotic author and a soon-to-be-wed actor, the pair are stuck in a middle-aged rut and making questionable decisions. But upon meeting the equally complex Maya and Terra, comedy and heart-felt emotion ensues, as the foursome learn just how intoxicating a good glass of wine and good company can be – for better and for worse.
Sideways: The Play’s arrival at St James is subsequent to its well-received premiere at the La Jolly Playhouse, and is an adaptation possessing bottles of comic richness and a touching edge.
