The Mariinsky Theatre, known for a time as the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and then renamed ‘Kirov’ by Stalin’s decree, was closely associated with Shostakovich. The Company has a special insight into the composer’s works and life in St Petersburg and embraces this legacy. This festival will contain two of his stage works that were premiered by the Company, The Golden Age and Leningrad Symphony. The Golden Age will be a new staging of this ballet specially created for the centenary year.
