Strauss’s first international hit follows Salome, step-daughter of Herod, as she becomes obsessed with John The Baptist, who is held captive by the King. Herod lusts after his step-daughter, but John does not; a failing that results in his downfall.
Canadian conductor Kwamé Ryan makes his UK debut in this second revival of David Leveaux’s 1996 production. Cheryl Barker, as regular guest artist of the ENO, makes her role debut in this production.
