At first enamoured of the Marschallin, the young Octavian loses his heart to Sophie when, on behalf of another, he delivers a silver rose to her as a declaration of love. Strauss’s own love affair with the female voice is here richly served in the casting of these three roles that drew from him some of his most radiant and seductive sounds in a score that combines extraordinary delicacy and passion.
